Welcome to the subtropics! Hong Kong has distinct dry and rainy seasons. There's an old saying: "April showers bring May flowers." Not true in this part of the world. March, April, and May are glorious, with blue skies, light breezes, and pleasant temperatures. Autumn is also dry and balmy. And then there's summer...
Remember jumping joyfully into puddles as a child? You can relive that experience during Hong Kong's summer months. Rain is a welcome reprieve from the heat, which can reach the mid-30s (90s Fahrenheit). Summer also brings the occasional typhoon, for which you'll be notified well in advance - signs appear everywhere when one is approaching. Intense rain can also cause school and business closings, but most days are manageable. Pack some plastic flip-flops. |
Luckily, our winters scarcely deserve the name. It's cool, but seldom cold - the mercury hovers around an easy-to-handle 15C (60F), with occasional dips to 10C (50F) or so. You'll need a warm coat, but don't break out the thermal underwear.
